Speaking with them

Mikel Insausti and Alaitz Sasiain (Hernani, Basque Country)

“Elorrio and Esteñibar are a little universe that allows to understand the Basque landscape, history and culture. And Fatima & Mikel are informed and nice partners to help the visitor accessing this universe. Besides, it is clear that they are not talking about an external reality; on the contrary, the Basque language and culture are deeply ingrained in their identity, both of them as Basques are long rooted, worldly-wise people.

(…) What we liked most was the time spent speaking with them, either around the table, by the warmth of the fireplace or strolling through the neighborhoods of Elorrio. On Sunday morning we took a long walk in Elorrio and its surroundings and it was interesting to hear from Fatima and Mikel the history of the places we visited. Because behind the current landscape and inert heritage hides a turbulent history and thousand events to tell…

(…) Water, iron, mountain, stone, wood, land, vine, language, identity… These are elements that frequently appear in the discourse of our hosts. And they are also, somehow, the fibers with which the past and present of Euskal Herria and Elorrio have been woven. Well, we are confident that thanks to these elements and the warmth felt in Esteñibar any visit will be enjoyable, as ours was”
